So far I have laid out two ideas for creating the future::
• Focus on the Vision no matter what
• Understand the Loss
The third idea is Transition the Mind. The idea of transitioning the mind comes from an idea I have been doing a lot of reading about. As you begin to create the future in your organization you must begin to move your mind from doing things out of memory to imagination. Studies have shown that the older you get, your brain shifts to doing things out of memory. You just do things because it's what you have always done.
Think about it how many things do you do every day out of memory? As we begin to create the future we must move to leading out of imagination not memory. When you lead out of memory you tend to put every idea in a box. You assume that you know what will work and what will not work. If you begin to live out of memory you will lose your drive to lead into the future. Everything does not have to add up logically. Some times in creating the future you will go with a feeling in your gut over making sure you have 90% of the info.
All I know is if we want to create the future we must lead with imagination. This is why I would ask those that have been leading your organization for a long time to really evaluate how you are leading. If you are leading your current team the same way you led the team you had 5 years ago, you are leading out of memory and not imagination. If you are leading your current congregation the same way you led the congregation that you had 3 years ago, there again you are leading out of memory and not imagination.
We must take the risk of leading with imagination. Imagination keeps your organization fun and exciting and always headed forward. It's time we all transition the mind to create the future.
